Respirators
Respirators-
The respirator is the best tool there is to reduce or block chemical exposure to the airways during a smoothing treatment. However, the salon world has yet to really implement this amazing tool. With the recent history of mask mandates related to Covid-19, the time might be nearing for stylists to see the importance of reducing exposure to more than just viruses.
So many stylists leave the industry due to side effects from respiratory chemical exposure in the salon which likely could have been prevented with a respirator. Chances are UnSprung wouldn't exist today if not for the Silicone 1/2 face mask with VOC cartridge and added particle filter. This respirator set up has been worn during every procedure without exception since about 2002. The cartridges are changed when the flow becomes reduced which a stylist will learn to recognize with regular use. The cartridges cost about $25 and usually last about 15-20 treatments. The only downside is the pressure on the bridge of the nose which is improved if the mask is fitted properly. After every use, the components are disassembled, sanitized and wiped free of all oil, lotion, makeup, etc...and left to air out before reassembly. A trucker style hat with bill is worn backwards underneath the respirator straps because it's just cool. No, really. The bill of the hat holds the straps upwards which removes the pressure from the back of the neck. The hat also keeps the straps from pulling on hair.
It's a lot to get used to but the biggest hurtle is getting clients used to it. When the respirator was first adopted at UnSprung, something to the effect of this was said with a smile and a good attitude, never a worried or fearful tone;
"If you want me to keep doing your hair for years to come, then I need to NOT breath this stuff in. So I either wear this, or I quit doing hair. Your choice"
"No, I'm not worried about you guys as clients, you're not here everyday breathing this air like I am."
"This is the hot new look of safety"
Before donning a respirator for the first time with a client, let them know you are implementing upgraded forms of PPE, including the respirator. Seeing that it's a part of a larger package addressing health concerns, reassures the client that you are serious about your health. Once clients understand the benefits of the respirator, they might want to follow your example and hold a respirator up to their faces as well, especially if they have asthma or other sensitivities.
One of the major ironies in the hair world is that we are okay with gloves, ventilation, sanitary surfaces and sterilized tools. None of that "creates a culture of fear or toxicity". It's simply standard protocol for health. But add in a respirator to filter the fumes coming off styling products, color, perms and straightening and all of a sudden stylists and product companies cringe because they don't want the client to associate their product with "toxicity". It's too bad. It's dishonest and the fear of loosing a sale wins out over the health of the hairdresser.
A little confidence will be needed to handle the feedback you will likely receive from clients and other stylists at first. But, over time, it will just be another tool to ensure your safety. No Biggie.
Remember, PPE IS SELF CARE.
